The Problem WithBody by Vi
Ask any fitness professional why they do what they do, and most likely they’ll respond with one or all of the following : Help people, make the world a better place, and get rich. Now, take those commendable motivators, and throw in a Black BMW, and you have the motivation driving the rapidly growing army of Body by Vi salespeople.
As well intentioned as they may be, the problem is that this growing army of hustlers pushing the “#1 Weight Loss Challenge In North America” is resorting to aggressive and deceptive sales tactics in order to generate sales for a potentially dangerous product filled with flawed ingredients. Before we get into the problem with “Body By Vi”, let’s talk about Multi Level Marketing.
What is Multi Level Marketing?
Multi Level Marketing, or MLM, for short is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for sales of other sales people they recruit. This is also known as pyramid selling.
MLM is a good business strategy for generating sales. It’s also one that is often criticized for its emphasis on recruiting others, exploiting personal relationships, and using cult like techniques used to enhance the devotion of the salesforce.
It’s a strategy used by plenty of nutritional supplement companies. Chances are if someone in your network is selling you on a product that “changed their life” or is giving you an opportunity to make extra income, it’s MLM.
To get started as a Body by Vi representative you pay $499 to get a starter kit which includes all of their marketing materials, samples, and product to start selling. This also comes with a weekly “rally call” which stresses the importance of selling, and recruiting others to sell for you.
At this point, you begin selling. You earn a commission for each sale past the $200 mark. Each month you must sell, or you are not allowed to continue. Many distributors are forced to buy their own product, just to stay in the game for another month, hoping to recoup the initial investment. In business, this is called an ‘escalation of commitment’.
But There’s a BMW Waiting For You!
Now, let’s say you’re one of the lucky few that managed to successfully rip enough people off and get to the “Regional Director” level. Body by VI will give you $600 a month to pay for your Body by Vi branded Black BMW.
That sounds awesome and a reason to start recruiting all of your friends to sell for you right away, but wait…
The Regional Director Level is reserved for people who do $12,500 a month in sales. And once you fall out of that sales range, you’re stuck paying for that 2-3 year lease on that BMW.
Talk about financial trap. It’s no wonder why some of these reps end up sabotaging personal relationships and come off as if they’ve got a gun to their head when trying to sell a flawed product.
Deceptive Marketing
Now, like most companies in the health supplement industry, Body By Vi is pushing a quick fix and magic solution with it’s “90 Day Challenge”.
The premise of Body By Vi is that if you drink their meal replacement shakes for 90 days, you will lose weight. A lot of it.
But What happens after 90 days? What happens when you stop buying the flawed shakes?
Like most “get fit fast” fitness solutions, Body By Vi arms their salesforce with an impressive collection of before/after pictures and testimonials from people who successfully “changed their lives in 90 days”.
How legitimate are these photos? I’m not sure. Some of them might be legit. You see, Body by Vi works for weight loss. It works in the same way Mark Haub lost 27 pounds in 8 weeks eating a diet comprised of Twinkies and Doritos.
But even with a working product, the Body By Vi salesforce has been known to use stolen before/after pictures, such as my friend Rick Wycoff https://www.facebook.com/ConstructingANewRick whose inspirational transformation has been seen in various Body By Vi sales promotions without his consent.
Rick has NEVER used a Body by Vi product before.
I wouldn’t expect any integrity coming from a company like Visalus, when they employ aggressive pyramid selling techniques for deceptively marketed and potentially dangerous products. They even have a whole “social” department of their company dedicated to handling any kind of negative reviews about their products on the internet.
Hell – I could probably sell a health product made in the bathroom of a dirty motel room if you give me a few hundred before/after pictures, multi million dollar marketing support, and trademark a few BS nutrition terms like “Fibersol™” and “Aminogen™”.
You see, the real problem with Body by Vi doesn’t lie in the aggressive MLM business model. It’s not the deceptive marketing either – that’s pretty much standard amongst the health supplement industry.
The real problem with Body by Vi is that their marketing machine reaches the masses, the shakes work, and they’re damaging the health of <strike> unsuspecting </strike> uneducated consumers everywhere.
Enter Mike…..
So here’s my main beef with Body By Vi in terms of nutritional and compliance standpoints –
Bad habits.
Don’t get me wrong, the ingredients themselves are pretty crappy, the calorie and macronutrient breakdown of the shakes certainly leaves a lot to be desired, and the whole dieting process is a vicious cycle. But developing bad habits and getting people into a disordered method of eating and thinking about food is my number one gripe.
The Body By Vi program does not teach followers how to eat healthily at all. I know folks have different opinions of what’s healthy and what’s not – we have paleo guys, macro counters, vegetarians, and staunch low-carbers, but I think we can all agree that relying on processed shakes for the majority of your meals is a pretty miserable way to live and doesn’t encourage a healthy lifestyle.
You stop viewing meal times as something to enjoy – no longer can you sit down with your family to an awesome home cooked dinner, or go out and get a bite to eat with friends after work.
Oh no, your meal is a delectable shake.
How does that sound? Yeah, you might go okay for a few days having most of your “meals” as shakes, but give it a week and you’ll be sick to the back teeth of them. Most of BBV’s plans tend to be based around having one normal (though very low calorie) meal each day, plus 2 shakes and one or two healthy snacks.
The one healthy meal each day is the single saving grace to the plan though even that has its flaws (more on this a little later.)
Whether you’re reading this as a health and fitness professional, dietitian or just a weekend warrior and nutrition enthusiast, who wants to start thinking about meals as little packets of powder that you mix in a shaker? I like protein shakes as a snack, but I’m sure as hell not going to ditch whole-food meals either.
I like goals-based dieting. So one week a client may have the goal of switching their cereal and toast breakfast to Greek yogurt with berries or an omelette. The next we might add in a fish oil supplement. Week three could involve making sure the client gets at least one serving of veggies at every meal, and week four we start tracking macronutrients. Instead of just getting people to think “Right, shake o’clock” we work on teaching the client about food and how to balance nutrition with lifestyle.
Throwing shakes at the problem and getting folks to mindlessly down one of these whenever it’s time to eat does nothing but creates poor, antisocial habits.
Ingredients
Let’s take a look at the ingredients in a Body By Vi shake –
Rookie error number one – Soy Protein.
A lot has been made of soy protein in the nutrition world.
Speak to an alpha-male carnivore and he’ll tell you that just a whiff of the stuff will give you bitch tits and have you weeping into your morning bowl of oats like a woman with the world’s worst case of PMT.
Talk with a vegan activist however, and they’ll tell you that soy is the greatest thing in the world.
I don’t fall into either camp particularly, although I am certainly more anti-soy than in favor of it. A little here and there won’t kill you, but I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to add it to any diet plan. Let’s take a look at what some fitness and nutrition pros think of soy –
Kaayla Daniel, author of “The Whole Soy Story” –
“People put themselves at risk for health problems if they consume soy milk, veggie burgers, and other unfermented soy products.”
JJ Virgin, PhD –
“Soy is rich in phytic acid, which blocks the absorption of minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. In other words, soy can be an antinutrient.
In countries where there is more soy consumption, we find more pancreatic, stomach and thyroid cancers.
Soy can lower testosterone in men.
For women, depending on how much you eat, soy can affect ovulation.”
Dr John Berardi –
“Whenever I’ve added any significant amount of soy to my diet, I’ve felt like crap. I’ve gained fat easier and definitely held more water. So now, whenever I see soy powder, I run with fear!”
Charles Poliquin –
“Soy is for Dorks.”
Dr. Jonny Bowden –
“Now, as far as foods go, I think there are some foods that are estrogenic. Soy, for example. Soy isn’t the worst food in the world, but it has estrogenic compounds. You don’t want this when trying to build muscle and optimize the hormonal environment. “
Tyler Simmons, NSCA and CSCS
“I think that the evidence shows that eating soy is about as smart as playing in traffic.”
I think bodybuilder and nutritional scientist Dr Layne Norton sums it up quite nicely here –
“If you’re looking to supplement with a protein powder, whey is most likely preferable to your goals given that many of the health benefits from soy can also be obtained by using whey protein, which is significantly more anabolic as well.”
That’s probably enough on soy for the time being, any other nasties you need to know about?
Sunflower Oil
Like soy, probably not the worst thing in the world, but it’s far from the best either. Sunflower oil is incredibly high in omega 6 – a type of fat that we, as a population, generally eat far too much of already.
Maltodextrin
This will be where the vast majority of the carbs in the shake come from.
Now I’m not one to tell you to only eat veggies for carbs, cut out beans and legumes, avoid grains, skip fruit, etc – I kind of think a carb is a carb, give or take. However, I still wouldn’t personally go out of my way to eat more maltodextrin. I’ve used it in my post-workout shakes in my days of following diets from Flex magazine, and it’s sweet as anything – I guess that’s why Visalus use it.
Zinc Oxide
Among the hype about this causing cancer and being virtually deadly in even minuscule doses, there does seem to be some decent evidence to suggest this stuff isn’t exactly awesome. According to the Office of Dietary Statistics, high does have zinc oxide “have been associated with a significant increase in hospitalizations for genitourinary causes.”
Calorie Theory
One BBV shake contains 90 calories.
Sounds pretty great, right?
Well, yes, to many dieters it does. When you consider this is about the same as in a banana, and less than a chicken breast, you’ve got to be on to a winner necking two or three of these a day.
Stop right there.
The calorie theory of eating fewer calories than you burn is all very well and good, but we know that it’s not quite as simple as that. If it was, every fat chick living off low-fat chips, cereal bars and pounding away for hours on the elliptical would be a svelte goddess within a week with the huge calorie deficit she creates, but this isn’t the case.
Oh, and add to this the fact each shake contains just a measly 12 grams of protein, and you’re onto a serious loser. I’ve picked boogers with more protein than that. One scoop of regular protein powder contains double this amount. Low protein plus low calories = muscle loss. So hey, maybe you will drop a few pounds after all. Trouble is, muscle probably isn’t the type of weight you’re looking to lose.
Also, most people don’t actually over-consume calories.
People tend to undereat most days, then have one or two high-calorie, almost binge days over a weekend. But even with these thrown in, they’re still in a calorie deficit come the end of the week.
This links into an idea that seems to be a bit of a buzz in the fitness world at the moment – metabolic damage.
The concept has been around a while, but has recently been given a higher profile by Layne Norton. Metabolic damage refers to consuming a calorie intake low enough that in theory you should lose weight, but you actually gain weight, or at the very least, don’t lose any. This is caused by a prolonged period of low-calorie dieting, often combined with excessive amounts of steady state cardio.
If you think about the average day’s food plan for a BBV dieter, it might contain two shakes, a few low-calorie snacks, such as an apple, low-fat cheese sticks, plain crackers or six to eight olives (yum yum yum) plus a dinner.
That’s 180 calories from the shakes, 300 or so from the snacks, and another 300 from dinner. Even if we’re generous and say the shakes are made with almond or soy milk, as the plan allows this, you’re still hitting far fewer than 1,000 calories a day.
This is not good.
For a week, you’ll probably do okay, but the longer you stick with it, the bigger the metabolic downward spiral, and the harder time you’ll have trying to recover your metabolism post-Visalus.
Healthy Meals
Vi’s idea of a healthy meal is laughable. Want to take a look at their sample meals? Here you go
– 3 oz chicken (no skin) 1 cup broccoli or carrots and a side salad with 2 tablespoons of fat-free dressing. (Because having broccoli AND carrots is clearly not healthy, duh!)
– 3 egg white omelette with mushrooms, onion, 1 oz fat-free cheese and the aforementioned salad.
– 3 oz salmon, asparagus, and, you guessed it – salad and fat-free dressing.
Yes folks, that is what Visalus consider to be a healthy meal.
Are you kidding me!? I’d rather go off the USDA’s carb-fest recommendations for a meal than this load of crapola. Talk about misery. What the hell do you do when you’re out at a restaurant or going to friends’ for dinner?
I think my 300 calorie meal quote from earlier might even be a little generous looking through this now.
The Wrap Up
Suddenly, it’s not looking too good for Body By Vi.
Poor quality ingredients, a horribly low protein and calorie content, poor eating habits, antisocial, metabolic damage, and just disgustingly bland, far from filling meals and snacks.

I have a friend who sells these shakes. She claims that the soy protein has been processed so it doesn’t contain the “bad” stuff and is therefore OK. They are also tooting the Body by Vi is gluten free horn. Can you address soy that’s been :made good” as they claim? I really want to get her to stop selling and consuming this shit. I think it is cancerous and horrible (and she let’s her young kids drink it too). She is losing weight and seems really happy, but I am worried about the long term effects. Sucralose, Maltodextrin, bad fats, these shakes are seriously poison, but the marketing people have all their bases covered and have these poor people (who don’t really have the knowledge to be asking the right question) pedaling the poison to their friends and families. I need ways to help her see that she needs to stop consuming this stuff…
Tell your friend that cocaine is also gluten free, and works wonders for weight loss.
Thanks concerned friend. My advice — let her do her own thing. It might be incredibly frustrating, but people with such a strong pre-disposed belief are generally very reluctant to change.

Isoflavins have been removed from the Soy and therefore the estrogen and mineral stripping components don’t exist in this type of Soy that is in the shake.
Cigarettes are bad for you, bleached flour, white sugar etc etc…why are people so anti Visalus ? Its not intended forever to stay on a shake, its a 90 day challenge that when done correctly is intended to be a catalyst that will change the mindset of people who are typically overweight, take little or no exercise and need to improve there health.
Because being on something for ‘x’ days just means you lose weight for that time. Losing weight and keeping it off means changing your lifestyle, something you never go back on.
You can drink a shake for 90 days but what after? You can change your diet right now and eat better but if you stop at 90 days it’s not going to help. Unless you plan on spending 1.50 twice a day, every day for the rest of your life, it’s just smarter to start eating better now and do that forever.
I am drinking the vi shakes, I do not plan on getting involved with the MLM, the plan just got me motivated when nothing else seemed to, my question is what can I use to make my own shake mix, I add fruit and pudding powders for flavor and mix with water, I am very allergic to bananas and avocados as they make me violently ill. I also use myfitnesspal because I believe you need to know what you are eating calorie wise, fat etc. I just want a good shake that I can have that is healthy, please help
I like Vega protein and greens as a shake or smoothie mix in. I use Vanilla unsweetened almond milk. For flavor: dry cocoa mixed into boiling water ( remove from stove) stir in Cocoa til it’s a syrupy consistentcy. 1 c water to 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Store in fridge. Use a tablespoon per 8 oz shake. Purée strawberries or other fruit either into your shake or in advance and add to taste. Pumpkin purée and spice make a great fall treat. Stevia is a good sweetener or succanat, if you aren’t low carb. Try also Torani sugar free syrups availabile at Cost Plus, smart and final and bev mo. GL!
Anyone noticed all the people defending it are basically saying the same rhetoric? I assume BBV actively hit sites to defend the brand. Just been looking at the contents of their powdered ‘instant’ nutrition…
Soy Protein is the primary source of protein, proven to disrupt digestion, which requires the inclusion of Fibersol which is used to make the fibre absorb more easily into your body, this is wise as Soy f**ks up your body’s ability to function – do often see healthy looking vegan’s?. It’s only after the the inclusion of this that you get to the lesser protein that should be dominant: Whey Protein Hydrolysate. Soy and Whey together can be good but with only 24% protein it’s shockingly bad regardless of what the ‘Tri-sorb’ claims are. It’s just three proteins, two of which are less prominent than Fibersol. :/
Maltodextrin is in abundance in all products, the reason is that:
1: It’s cheaper than sugar.
2. You can call your product sugar free
3. It’s got a fatty texture so it can replace fat whilst leaving the sensation caused by unctuous fattiness.
but…
As this is absorbed super quick, unless you work out somehow it turns to fat quicker than sugar. So when the weights off, it’s not staying off.
Oh… where on earth is there a patented Anti-Aging & Energy formula proven to work? There isn’t. Anywhere. BBV claim to have it in their Vi-Pak. After the claims of Anti-aging they declare: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to treat, diagnose, cure or prevent any disease.
Aging is a Disease.
In a nutshell… don’t be lazy, cook. It’s just calorie deficit, once you stop the shakes you’ll pack the weight on. It’s cheaper and healthier to cook, im a single dad with two kids, a business to run and a house to maintain, i also cook everything i eat. We all have time.

First of all, like our site, lot of god stuff. But I feel obliged to give my 2 cents here. I just read you email about fitness scams and your opinion on weightloss shakes.
Now as I use and promote Herbalife products myself there are a few things I want to point out about your statements in the email.
I cant speak for every herbalife healthcoach but I personaly promote a healthy active lifestyle where we do eat a lot of good food and use herbalife products as a supplement. So people do not starve themselves, they do eat food, they meet their macro and calorie needs and can enjoy themselves when they want to.
Im not trying to pick a fight, but I do love a good back and forth of different opinions and I would like to hear more about where you make your opinion and statements from
– They wreck your metabolism
So, if your meeting you macro and calorie needs how does it wreck your metabolism?

I eat a lot of food, fruits, veggies, chicken, salmon, beef, sweet potatoes, brown rice… I do have my shake twice a day, mixed in a blender and usually I put some ginger spinach frozen berries etc in it.
– Make social events miserable
How so? If my friend want to go out and eat, I can go and eat with them. I choose weather or not I want to and if it meats my goals
– Cause huge weight regain post-diet
If you live a crappy lifestyle, take on lifestyle change and loose weight, then go back to the crappy lifestyle – You´ll gain the weight back – simple
– Cost an absolute bomb
I used to spend more on supplements before I got introduced to Herbalife – Plus If i would swap out my shakes for an equally nutritious meal it would cost me more
I know what you´re thinking, I work as a herbalife healtcoach so I´m biast and have the agenda of making money by “scamming” people. If I would not get a dime in my life from herbalife, I would still recomment the products to anyone.

I actually promoted Vi, however this, coupled with trying to sell the new Vi Cereal ($49 for 2 week supply, shake in a flake lol), I stopped promoting. Had daily phone calls from upline saying I wasn’t working hard enough. Just got sick of it all.

Mike….I just bought into this product…it was a guy whos training for his 3 triathalon and i was convinced that maybe body by vi could help me….now i feel like maybe a good whey protien with a sensable eating plan may help me. So how do i get out of the auto pay and what ever else…i had my doubts in the beginning but he was like the motivational speaker in the movie YES Man..and so aggressive and convincing i was like ok ok ok….now i wish i hadnt…..hes a little frightening so how do i get out of this vi mess??

Just ring Vi up, the number is on the back of the pack and just tell them to cancel everything, they ask why but dont hassle you to stay with them. I had a go at Vi just to see what the hype was, it did work but as soon as I stopped I put on weight! Plus I was always starving no matter how many snacks I had! The shakes are really nice as you can make them to any flavour you want but no its a waste of time and money! Stick to eating healthy and working out

I guess there are massive companies out there who pay bloggers to print mis-information and discredit a new company… why ? who knows, but big business is like a commercial war and when a small $7m company comes up with a new 90 day challenge that is 99% successful and grows to $1bn in 3 years…then there will be plenty of reasons why some people will want to throw a spanner in the works.
At the end of the day when someone is negative they will find something negative or create something negative.
If we googled air, water, milk, bread, frozen food, electricity, mobile phones, cosmetics, cars, gas, oil, sunshine, money, religion, internet, social media, fast food et al we will find something negative – this is reality.

Hi, this stuff is supposed to start selling in Germany and Austria now. I’ve been told I can make big money by belonging to the top right from the beginning. But when I saw the: 3 people talk to 3 people talk to 3 people scheme, I immediatly said I don’t do MLM. My friend is convinced she is going to get rich on this. Thanks for the input and showing me my gut feeling was right!
My friend has been jamming this stuff down my throat for months.
I tried to calmly explain that lots of exercise and a good diet is the best way to get fit and I got shot down with free cars and techno babble.
I saw an early vi promo video and 90% of the people in the video were obese, wide eyed and screaming about their bmw.
This says nothing about fitness to me.
I’m in good shape, eat right and exercise – I couldn’t care less about a bmw.
Why is this business doing so well ?

Here’s the biggest problem facing the health fitness industry. Personal trainers are not dieticians. Nutritionists are not dieticians. If you take nutrition advice from anyone other than a dietician you are simply asking for trouble. Don’t believe it? Do the research. What you will find is that sports nutritionists are under educated and unregulated. Listening to a nutritionist for your dietary requirements is like going to McDonald’s for financial advice.

I love this stuff and I have lost 13 lbs I am now a size 2 and at 54 high school thin. I was never able to do this before. It could be mind set but I believe the shakes have a filling feeling and I mix them with spinach and fruit. I eat a small meal and it’s making me feel awesome. I will not promote this or join the selling team but I will continue to tell people the great effects it had for me and keep drinking them!!

I was quite shocked to find such a harsh review of the Body by Vi plan, in the past past I had gave Herbalife a real good go to shed some fat and after 6 months on their shakes I had the dreaded bitch tits from all the soy and hadn’t had a firm poo in months – after all this I had barely lost a couple of pounds!
I had tried a bunch of other stuff with little success and when Body by Vi hit the UK in 2012 I gave it a go for 90 days and lost 32lbs!
No bitch tits or other problems this time, from what I heard from Jenny it was something to do with the Tri-protein something or other. Basically it is some high quality soy mixed with two types of whey protein – not just the cheap GM soy used by other brands.
I don’t kow much at all about ingredients and quite honestly don’t care much about that, all I want is the result without the dodgy side effects. The only reason why I didn’t stay longer on the program and lose more was basically I just missed real food!
I have been researching to try and find out what caused all my illnesses. After a year of Dr after Dr not understanding why my body decided to shut itself down , attack my own liver, spleen, lungs/chest, digestive tract, skin rashes and affect my hormonal balances in my body… its been determined that it was caused by Visuals. I am figuring out how to have the product further tested and hopefully get this off the market or to the point where they have to warn their customers of the risks in digesting this so called supplement. I have spent thousands from being hospitalized to going to see Dr. Specialists. My liver enzymes went over 700 at one point!!!! I went to Mt. Sani, which is one of the BEST liver specialist departments in the states and no one could diagnose me because non of it made sense. UNTIL NOW.. please contact me if you have had the same problems. But the problem is this is just bashing…..badly done at that ….. too bad your not even good and slamming someone else. Perhaps you should get a real job…….I bet you’d be fantastic as a Walmart greeter or a cashier at Taco Bell. I hear they are paying very well compared to Loser Blogging.

I currently exercise daily and after each workout, I have whey protein with water.
